THE HWY 70 CONNECTOR: July Edition

Dear Neighbor,

I hope this email finds you well. Please take a few minutes to read our latest newsletter, which includes highlights on some of the things we've been up to in Raleigh. As always, our office is open to assist you, take your feedback, and answer your questions. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

At your service,

Chris Humphrey

State Representative

STANDING TOGETHER FOR GOD & COUNTRY

Following the assassination attempt on President Trump that tragically killed an innocent rally-goer earlier this month, it was refreshing to join our friends at Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church’s annual ‘God & Country Day’ event.

It’s always a joy to come together and celebrate our shared faith and patriotism — the strong bonds that unite us. I’m honored to serve the public and proud to be a part of such a dedicated community.

GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW GREENE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

It’s a great time to be a Ram! Last week, we broke ground on the new Greene Central High School in Snow Hill, NC — home of our 2024 state baseball champions. It was an honor to speak at this ceremony to share insights on how we secured $62mm in state funding through the NC General Assembly.

This much-needed project is not just a new building, it represents the promise, opportunity, and growth our community deserves. The new Greene Central High School will open in 2026, serving as a center of learning and a source of pride for generations to come. Thank you to all of the county leaders that partnered with us to make this happen.

ON AIR 📺 PBS-NC "STATE LINES" PROGRAM

We recently joined PBS North Carolina for an episode of State Lines — a roundtable discussion with political analysts, journalists, and elected officials, talking about the state’s top legislative stories and current events. On this episode, we discussed the “Biden Effect” on down-ballot races, Governor Cooper as a VP prospect, the latest Veto Overrides, and the State Health Plan’s impact on rural communities.

ICYMI: SENATOR PERRY RETIRES FROM NCGA

Earlier this month, Senator Jim Perry announced his resignation from the NC General Assembly. It goes without saying, Senator Perry has been a tremendous legislative partner — and will continue to be a great friend and mentor to me personally and to my office.

When you see Senator Perry around the community, please join me in thanking him for his 5+ years of service to our community and to the Great State of North Carolina.

We wish you and your family all the best, Senator Perry!

P.S. This week, New Bern Alderman Bob Brinson was nominated by the Republican 2nd Senatorial District Committee to serve the remainder of Senator Jim Perry’s unexpired term. I'm looking forward to working with Senator-designate Brinson in the months ahead. READ MORE >>>

GROUNDBREAKING FOR LCC'S SENATOR JIM PERRY AVIATION CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE

It was an honor to join community leaders, educators, and supporters at the groundbreaking ceremony of Lenoir Community College’s Senator Jim Perry Aviation Center for Excellence — named in honor our dear friend, Senator Jim Perry, an alumnus of LCC who has done so much in service to our community.

The new center marks a significant milestone in LCC’s efforts to advance education and innovation, providing state-of-the-art training and research facilities that will equip students with the skills needed to excel in the aviation industry.

The Senator Jim Perry Aviation Center for Excellence will offer cutting-edge technology, simulators, and hands-on experiences available to all juniors and seniors in High School, who can to enroll for free. Students will receive ground instruction and earn college credit through the Private Pilot Essentials Certificate Program.

A great educational and economic benefit for our region!

LATEST VETO OVERRIDES

We overrode 3 more of Governor Cooper’s vetoes since our last newsletter, turning key legislation into law:

Strengthening our infrastructure with bipartisan accountability (HB 198)

Toughening penalties for criminals hiding their identity while targeting the public and police (HB 237)

Enhancing juvenile justice to ensure both fairness and accountability (HB 834)

Our supermajority is delivering real results for our community. Together, we’re fighting to make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

EXPANDING BROADBAND ACCESS

Broadband connectivity is critical to ensuring that rural communities have access to the same opportunities as our urban neighbors. That’s why we delivered $80 million in state grants to improve high-speed internet access for 26,000 households and 900 businesses across 33 counties. I’m running for re-election to continue closing the digital divide and ensuring more residents have reliable internet services. Join us in this work at www.ChrisHumphreyNC.com!

RIBBON CUTTING FOR NEW EMS STATION

I had the honor of speaking at the ribbon cutting for the new EMS Station 3 in Greene County — and I’m proud to have played a role in securing state funding to support the construction of this state-of-the-art facility.

This station was greatly needed and will significantly enhance emergency response times and the quality of care in Maury, Hookerton, Lizzie, Castoria, and Scuffleton. My heartfelt gratitude goes to all the current and former volunteer fire & EMS personnel in Greene County — your hard work and sacrifices have kept our residents and their property safe, building a stronger community for us to call home!
