Dear Neighbor,
I hope you and your family are doing well. We're back in Raleigh as the 2024 Legislative Short Session has officially convened this week. They call it "short" because it's only supposed to last a few months, as we're making tweaks to the State Budget and addressing emerging policy issues of a time-sensitive nature. Stay tuned for more updates on our social media pages in the coming months.
In the meantime, we've put together the below newsletter to highlight some of the things we're doing to serve you, including news of a $1.4 billion budget surplus, a preview of our legislative agenda, and a special event happening tonight in Greene County!
As always, my office is open as a resource should you need any assistance navigating state government. Thank you for your continued trust, support, and prayers.
At your service,
Chris Humphrey
State Representative
STATE FORECASTS $1.4 B BUDGET SURPLUS
We’ve worked diligently at the NC General Assembly to keep taxes low and cut wasteful spending in state government. As a result, the latest economic forecast highlights a $1.4 billion surplus for our state, indicating strong economic health.
There's a reason so many families and businesses want to move here, and this report is further evidence that our policies are working. This is encouraging news as we continue working to maintain North Carolina's status as the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
HUMPHREY UNVEILS LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
I’m pleased to share my legislative agenda, which includes support for Israel, strengthening anti-squatting laws, ensuring election integrity, support for law enforcement, and economic improvement.

HOPE PREP STUDENTS VISIT NCGA
It was a joy to host students from Hope Preparatory School in Kinston at the NC General Assembly earlier this month, touring the historic building and discussing our state's legislative process. These students asked thoughtful questions and showed a sincere interest in the work of state government — a testament to the bright future of our community.
RIME EXPO FOR EASTERN NC STUDENTS
It was an inspiring day last week for over 500 students from Greene, Lenoir, Wayne, and Jones Counties as they explored a wealth of career opportunities right here in our region. A huge thank you to Dr. Rusty Hunt and the entire team at Lenoir Community College for hosting the Regional Industry & Manufacturing Expo (RIME). Events like these are crucial for empowering our future workforce and driving local economic growth!
NEW COMMERCIAL KITCHEN AT LENOIR COUNTY FARMERS MARKET
Earlier this month, I was honored attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new "Tammy's Commercial Kitchen" at the Lenoir County Farmers Market. This exemplary project is a testament to the extraordinary efforts of its namesake, Tammy Kelly, Director of the Lenoir County Co-Op Extension Office. This initiative will help empower our local farmers and benefit the whole community. I'm proud to support this remarkable advancement.
MRS. HUMPHREY ADMITTED TO SCOTUS BAR
Please join me in congratulating my wife, Mrs. Terry Humphrey, on her admittance to the US Supreme Court Bar earlier this month.
VISITING PINK HILL ELEMENTARY
I recently visited Pink Hill Elementary School and spent some time with Mrs. Brenda Griffin's class. Her students donated almost $500 worth of non-perishable food to Jim Godfrey and Mary's Kitchen, with the help of a Donors Choose grant funded by the Allstate Foundation.
Principal Lee Anne Hardy showed off her new driveway at the school, which was funded in the state budget a couple of years ago. We were both happy to finally see it near completion.
LCPS STUDENTS ACCEPTED TO NC GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL
Congratulations to Mackenzie, Eagan, Kayla, Lillian, Madeline, and Hayden for their outstanding accomplishment of being accepted into NC Governor’s School. Thousands have applied for this honor, and it brings our district and myself great pride to see how driven and high-achieving these six students are. To see so many students from Lenoir County Public Schools accepted is an incredible testament to the hard work of our students, educators, and the entire school system. I have no doubt that these bright young minds will continue to make Lenoir County proud.
