RALEIGH, N.C. – Representative Chris Humphrey (R – Lenoir, Greene, Jones) has formally sent a letter to the North Carolina Cemetery Commission expressing concern about the deteriorating condition of roads in and around Pinelawn Cemetery in Kinston.

In the letter, Rep. Humphrey asks the Commission to look into concerns raised by Lenoir County residents regarding potholes, uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and unsafe conditions for families, elderly visitors, and funeral processions accessing the cemetery grounds.

“Pinelawn Cemetery is sacred ground for so many families in our community, including my own,” Rep. Humphrey said. “My parents and grandparents are laid to rest there, and I know firsthand how important it is for families to be able to visit their loved ones safely and with dignity. The current road conditions deserve attention, and I am asking the appropriate state body to help determine the proper next steps.”

Rep. Humphrey noted that residents have contacted his office about deteriorated roads that can make it difficult to navigate the cemetery, particularly for grieving families, older visitors, and funeral processions.

“A cemetery should be a place of peace, reflection, and respect,” Rep. Humphrey said. “When families come to honor those they love, they should not have to worry about unsafe roads, standing water, or whether a funeral procession can safely move through the grounds. This is about preserving dignity for the families of Kinston and Lenoir County.”

Rep. Humphrey’s letter requests that the Commission determine whether cemetery management has been made aware of the concerns and what steps, if any, are planned to address the condition of the roads. He also offered to assist with facilitating community input or a formal complaint submission if needed.

“This is not about assigning blame,” Rep. Humphrey said. “It is about making sure the concerns of our citizens are heard, that the proper process is followed, and that families receive the safe and respectful access they deserve.”

Representative Humphrey said his office will continue to monitor the situation and assist constituents seeking guidance on the appropriate process.
